This is a dilemma most of us have faced at one time or another, some of you might even be facing it right now. What do you do when you are in a job that you really don't like? Perhaps it's an issue with your boss or co-workers, or the responsibilities and focus of the position just doesn't thrill you like you thought it would when you took the job. And, now, for whatever reason(s) you just aren't able to leave. What do you do? ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

What Do You Do When You're Stuck in a Job You Hate?

From now on, pretend that you are going to be tested every hour.

You have a couple of choices.

One choice is to suffer through day by day until you either get fired for your poor attitude or you find another job that you like more. All the while you're in the position you make everyone around you nearly as miserable as you are, repelling potential customers, and bringing the company down. That's one option.

The other option is to create happiness and meaning in your work life regardless of the current circumstances. This is a tall order. And, I've not seen too many people who are able to do this 100 percent of the time. I have seen that attitude – a focus on the positive, on finding happiness and meaning in tough situations – is key to success, change, and moving forward to better situations.

So, how do you create happiness and meaning when you're stuck in a job that you hate?

I suggest that you break your days down into one hour segments. For example, imagine that you have to go to a one-hour meeting. You are dreading this pointless, unnecessary meeting and everything about it!

Now, imagine that at the end of this boring, time-sucking meeting, you are going to be tested with four simple questions about how you spent that hour:

  • Did I do my best to be happy?

  • Did I do my best to find meaning?

  • Did I do my best to build positive relationships?

  • Did I do my best to be fully engaged?

If you knew you were going to be tested, what would you do differently to raise your score on any of these four items?

I've posed this question to thousands of executives around the world. Some typical responses are:

  • I would go into the meeting with a positive attitude.

  • Instead of waiting for someone to make it interesting, I'd make it interesting myself.

  • I'd try to help the presenter in some way instead of critiquing her in my head.

  • I would try to build a positive relationship with someone in the room.

  • I would pay attention and put away my smartphone.

Here's my radical suggestion for what to do when you're stuck in a job you hate. From now on, pretend that you are going to be tested every hour. Your heart and mind will thank you for it. Each hour that you spend at this job is an hour that you won't get back. If you are miserable, it is your misery, not the company's, not your boss's, not your co-workers'. Why waste your hours being disengaged and cynical? By taking personal responsibility for your own engagement, you make a positive contribution to your company. Even more important, you begin creating a better, happier you!

Life is good. Marshall.

Here's this week's updates:

1/ Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep

2/ Stop saying "subscribe to my newsletter" because newsletter sucks

3/ Email design vs content. Who wins?

4/ No budget - how to do marketing without spamming?

5/ Imposter syndrome a bit less for me this week :)

6/ If email marketing was a super hero 🦸, it'd be __________

1/ Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep

I came across this interesting post that talks about why you should stop being a people pleaser.

I've definitely made this mistake in the past, and still makes this mistake today from time to time 😅

Are you a people pleaser?

2/ Stop saying "subscribe to my newsletter" because newsletter sucks

Cold site visitors view you as a stranger since they don't know who you are (yet).

❌ Asking them to subscribe to your newsletter is bad.

Why?

Because they don't want to join a stranger's newsletter.

They're already subscribed to many newsletters. And they don't know if you're legit (i.e. provide helpful and useful content or not).

Saying "Join our newsletter where we'll provide you with the latest tips on X" will not motivate them to sign up.

Latest tip is vague. What latest tip are you talking about?

What EXACTLY will I get if I enter my email? Will it solve my problem now?

✅ Provide immediate benefits people can visualize right now. A lead magnet - old-fashioned pdf or video or email series is more enticing.

.

"5 simple exercises you can do at home today to start getting 6-pack abs"

vs

"Sign up for my fitness newsletter"

.

Another lead magnet example from one of our amazing customers, Pam Barnhill:

vs

Are you still using the vague "sign up for my newsletter" when you can get better opt-in conversions via a specific lead magnet?

3/ Email design vs content. Who wins?

As a content creator, do you think subscribers open your emails because of how good looking they are...

Or because of how the content can be helpful to them?

Unless you're trying to win design competitions or run an ecom store...

Sending emails with a good enough / simple design and just let your content take center stage is a better approach than sending fancy-designed emails.

Here's why:

✅ Better email deliverability because simple design means cleaner html

✅ Faster to set up and send emails

✅ You're giving a personal (rather than a corporate) vibe — people want to connect with other humans, not with brands.

✅ The inbox is a place to consume content, not to be in awe of how good looking the emails are.

If you want to show off your design skills, use a CTA to take people to your website.

There, feel free to use fancy design.

Do you use fancy or simple design?

4/ No budget - how to do marketing without spamming?

Recently I stumbled upon a forum question:

enable img to see this question

I gave the OP this answer, and thought it'd be useful to include it in today's email.

Here's my answer:

If just starting out, I suggest via relevant community (max 1) & social media (max 1).

Follow your target audience, genuinely engage w/ them, uplift them when they're down, congratulate them when they win.

Reply / comment on their posts, like them, amplify their posts by sharing.

Share valuable content that ties in to whatever you're selling.

Over time some will check out your profile -> go to your site -> sign up for your email list -> become customers.

Are you planning to spam? If yes, please reconsider. ðŸ˜…

5/ Imposter syndrome a bit less for me this week :)

When you get unsolicited feedback like this, it really makes your day and slightly reduces the imposter syndrome in me:

6/ If email marketing was a super hero 🦸, it'd be __________

For me, it's Spiderman.

Ironman says Peter talks too much.

And I agree.

But when it comes to email marketing, it's a good thing.

At least in the beginning stages of your relationship with new subscribers, you have to be talkative. Send them daily emails. Remember, everyone and their dog is vying for your subscribers' attention. If you don't show up in their inbox daily, they'll forget about you quickly.

So if email marketing was a super hero, it'd be __________.

Reply and let me know.

IL-2: A Cytokine with Immunostimulatory and Immunoregulatory Functions
Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is a pleiotropic cytokine central to the regulation of T-cell responses. In addition, IL-2 plays critical roles in a wide range of other immune modulatory actions.
il-2
IL-2 mediates its function by binding to IL-2 receptors (IL-2R). There are three subunits of IL-2 receptor, α chain (CD25), β chain (CD122), and γ chain (CD132). The β and γ chains are shared between IL-2 and IL-15 receptor complexes, while the γ chain is also used by IL-4, IL-7, IL-9, and IL-21. IL-2 binds to IL-2Rα alone with low affinity, to IL-2Rβ and IL-2Rγ heterodimer with intermediate affinity, and to IL-2α/β/γ heterotrimer with high affinity. Expression of IL-2R by different immune cell subsets determines the cellular sensitivity to IL-2. IL-2 signaling is then transduced via three different pathways: JAK-STAT, PI3K/Akt/mTOR, and MAPK/ERK.
Recent studies have recognized IL-2/IL-2R signaling pathway as an important target for the treatment of various diseases, including cancer, infectious diseases, and autoimmune diseases. New strategies are now being developed to improve the efficacy and lower toxic effects of IL-2 therapy. Sino Biological has developed a panel of recombinant IL-2 and IL-2R protein reagents to facilitate the study of the biology of IL-2.

   Recombinant IL-2 Proteins
In addition to therapeutic usage, recombinant IL-2 protein also allows the culture of IL-2 dependent T-cell lines and NK cell lines, the proliferation of mitogen-activated T cells and NK cells, the establishment of thymocyte, splenocyte or peripheral blood lymphocyte derived T-cell lines, and the generation of lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells.
Sino Biological has developed high activity IL-2 proteins from various species. The activities of these proteins have been validated by cell proliferation assays using CTLL2 cells.

Cytokines Share the IL-2R γ Chain
The cytokines that share the common gamma-chain (γc) among their receptor subunits including interleukin-2 (IL-2), IL-4, IL-7, IL-9, IL-15, and IL-21, play dominant roles in the regulation of immune responses.
Among members of γc family, IL-15 shares many biological activities to IL-2 as they bind common hematopoietic receptor (IL-2/15Rβ & γc) subunits and may compete for the same receptor. IL-15 induces the activation of JAK kinases, as well as the phosphorylation and activation of transcription activators, STAT3, STAT5, and STAT6.
