Subject: 3D printing, from hype to hyper cool

The 3D printing (digital manufacturing) market has had a lot of hype over the past few years.

Most recently, it seems this technology arena has entered the "trough of disillusionment," as 3D printing stock prices have taken a hit.

But the fact remains: this exponential technology is still in its childhood and its potential for massive disruption (of manufacturing and supply chains) lies before us.

This is a blog about 3D printing's vast potential – our ability to soon 3D print complex systems like jet engines, rocket engines, cars and even houses.

But first, a few facts:

  • Today we can 3D print in some 300 different materials, ranging from titanium to chocolate.
  • We can 3D print in full color.
  • We can 3D print in mixed materials -- imagine a single print that combines metals, plastics and rubbers.
  • Best of all, complexity and personalization come for free.

What Does It Mean for "Complexity to Be Free"?

Think about this: If you 3D print a solid block of titanium, or an equal-sized block with a thousand moving components inside, the time and cost of both 3D printings is almost exactly the same (the solid blog is actually more expensive from a materials cost).

Complexity and personalization in the 3D printing process come for free – i.e. no additional cost and no additional time.

Today, we're finding that we can 3D print things that you can't manufacture any other way.

Let's take a look at some of the exciting things being 3D printed now.

3D Printing Rocket Engines:

In 2014, SpaceX launched its Falcon 9 rocket with a 3D-printed Main Oxidizer Valve (MOV) body in one of the nine Merlin 1D engines (a print that took less than two days, compared with a typical castings cycle measured in months).

Even more impressive, SpaceX is now 3D printing its SuperDraco engine for the Dragon-2 capsule. The process resulted in an order of magnitude reduction in lead time, taking it from initial concept to the first hotfire in just over three months.

On a similar note, Planetary Resources Inc. (PRI) is demonstrating the 3D printing of integrated propulsion and structures of its ARKYD series of spacecraft. This technology has the potential to reduce the parts count by 100x, with an equal reduction in cost and labor.

3D Printing Jet Engines:

GE has just demonstrated the 3D printing of a complete, functioning jet engine (the size of a football), able to achieve 33,000 RPM.

3D printing has been used for decades to prototype parts – but now, with advances in laser technology, modeling and printing technology, GE has actually 3D printed a complete product.

GE engineers produced this model of a GEnx jet engine using an advanced 3-D printing technique called direct metal laser melting

GE engineers produced this model of a GEnx jet engine using an advanced 3-D printing technique called direct metal laser melting.

Xinhua Wu, a lead researcher at Australia's Monash University, recently explained the allure of 3D printed jet engines.

Due to their complexity, she noted, jet engine components can take anywhere from 6 to 24 months to manufacture. But with 3D printing, the manufacturing time can be cut down to something like one to two weeks.

"Simple or complex, 3D printing doesn't care," she said. "It produces [parts] in the same time."

3D Printing Cars:

This year, Jay Rodgers from Local Motors built a 3D printed car.

Riding in 3D Printed Car

It is made of ABS plastic that has been reinforced with carbon fiber.

As they describe, "Everything on the car that could be integrated into a single material piece has been printed. This includes the chassis/frame, exterior body, and some interior features. The mechanical components of the vehicle, like battery, motors, wiring, and suspension, are sourced from Renault's Twizy, an electric powered city car."

It is called "The Strati," costs $15,000, and gets 80 kilometers range on a single charge. Today the car takes 44 hours to print, but soon the team at Local Motors plans to cut the print process to less than 24 hours.

In the past, producing a new car with a new design is very expensive and time consuming – especially when it comes to actually designing the tooling to handle the production of the newly designed car.

With additive manufacturing, once you've designed the vehicle on a computer, you literally press *print*.

3D Printing Houses:

In China, a company called WinSun Decoration Design Engineering 3D printed 10 full-sized houses in a single day last year.

3D Printed House

They used a quick-drying concrete mixture composed mostly of recycled construction and waste material and pulled it off at a cost of less than $5,000 per house. Instead of using, say, bricks and mortar, the system extrudes a mix of high-grade cement and glass fiber material and prints it, layer by layer. The printers are 105 feet by 33 feet each and can print almost any digital design that the clients request. The process is environmentally friendly, fast and nearly labor-free. Manufacturing is a $10 trillion dollar business ripe for disruption.

We will continue to see advances in additive manufacturing dramatically changing how we produce the core infrastructure and machines that makes modern life possible.

Fwd: is Heroic Public Speaking right for you?

Subject: is Heroic Public Speaking right for you?

From: Michael Port <questions@michaelport.com>
To: im1@bydf.com

There's a reason Heroic Public Speaking is making enormous waves and some of the people you know and admire are signing up in their droves to learn this revolutionary speaking and performance system.

There's a reason my new book about public speaking - Steal The Show - was snapped up by publishers for the biggest advance I've ever gotten.

There's a reason speakers - both professional and amateur - have been paying me thousands and thousands to have me turn them into great performers.

That reason is because performance matters.

(It's also because serious people make serious investments in themselves.)

Now I don't care if your performance is in the bedroom or the boardroom. What I do care about it is whether you're exceptional or whether you're an also-ran.

Because the exceptional - the true players - command higher fees, more respect and more repeat business than the also-rans.

The true players make a DIFFERENCE to the world. They're leaders while the also-rans are spectators.

So ask yourself this: next time you take the limelight, do you want people saying "huh?" or do you want people saying "I GET YOU AND YOU EXCITE ME?"

Because that's what The Heroic Public Speaking Total Immersion Program will do for you.

I've been getting a lot of questions, here are some of the most common ones. If you have a specific question, either email questions@michaelport.com or call (414) 367 7678 and ask for Dan.

Question: Will you be running the Heroic Public Speaking Total Immersion Program again in the future, if the timing is really difficult for me right now?

Yes. We will probably run the program again in the future. But, honestly, I have NO IDEA when that will be. What I know for certain, though, is that it will be CONSIDERABLY more expensive. This is the second, improved run of this program. It is already considerably more expensive than the first time.

When you join any of my high-quality programs, you benefit from democratic pricing. I have never reduced the pricing of any of my programs when I've repeated them. The opposite, in fact.

So there's another incentive to take action right now.

Yes, I'm ready Michael. Let's do this.

If you're saying "I don't have the time to do it right now", then I hear you. That's why you have lifetime access to all the material so that you can approach it from an "auditor's perspective" and make use of the material when it's going to be of use.

But listen: timing is NEVER perfect.

If you really want to master public speaking and performance, but you feel that you don't have time to do the program with us right now, then you're NEVER going to find the time to do it on your own.

Think about that for a second.

If you're saying "I don't know if I can commit to a structured, taught and accountability-driven program that has hard deadlines and key dates, with the guidance of expert teachers who want me to succeed," then how are you ever going to do it without us?

If you want the result, you'll make the time now. You'll get it done faster with us.

Simply put: if you don't do it with us right now, you'll probably never do it.

Question: what is the time commitment?

You have nine weeks of distance learning: live webinars (you can see us) that take place twice a week. During those sessions we'll be teaching you very specific and actionable lessons. You'll get an assignment at the end of each session. All sessions are recorded.

You also have 24/7 access to our forums and community.

With regards to homework: that's up to you. You can spend half an hour a week or or half an hour a day. Or more.

Question: are these the right questions to be asking?

No. If you have a desire to change the world, to do something big, to tell a story, questions like "how much time is it going to take" is not the right question.

The real question might be "am I afraid to do the work?"

Am I afraid of my own greatness if I commit to it?
Am I afraid of showing up and committing to great change?

The REAL question might be "how much do I want this?"

Because until you're willing to admit to yourself how much you want something, you can't have it.

If you want to be a great performer and a remarkable public speaker, you've got to admit that you want it now. You've got to raise your hand and say "I'm ready to commit. I'm ready to do the work."

The real question is NOT about time, it's about the way you see the world.

Question: do I need any technical skills to participate?

If you know how to read an email, you have all the technical skills you need. We've even set up a teaching environment where you just click a single link to take part in the live trainings.

Question: What's the return on investment for this program?

The return on investment will be significant in a number of ways.

  • If you're a $200, $2,000 or $4,000 speaker right now, you will be able to increase your fees dramatically and significantly, if that's the direction you want to go.
  • If you're speaking because you want to promote your business, you are going to get BOOKED SOLID, if that's the direction you want to go. That means more clients, more money in the bank, more freedom, more pride, more joy.
  • If you're speaking because you want to share a message, you will be reaching many, many more people in a much more effective way ... and saving the world one speech at a time.

What do I do next?

You join the Heroic Public Speaking Total Immersion Program before your opportunity disappears:

Fwd: 4 Lessons Learned from the 10-Minute Declutter Launch

4 Lessons Learned from the 10-Minute Declutter Launch
There are a lot of lessons to be learned when launching a book.  In fact, even though I've had 50+ book launches, I'm still learning new things.

This week Barrie Davenport and I published a book titled: 10-Minute Declutter - The Stress-Free Habit for Simplifying Your Life

Side Note: I'll be honest here… One of the reasons I'm writing this email is because I want you to check out the book.  If you want to simplify your home, grab it now because it's only $0.99 (or the equivalent) until midnight Saturday (the 23rd).

Anyway…

Here are four lessons I learned while launching this book:

#1. Polling Your Audience is…AWESOME!

Nowadays I start every book with a simple question.  When I think of a topic, I will email my DevelopGoodHabits list and ask a question like:

"What is your biggest challenge with _____"

Seriously, that's all I ask.

And the result?

My inbox will be flooded with 200 to 400 responses (some of these messages are more than 500 words long.)

The truth is it's easy to write a book when people describe, in specific detail, what they want to learn.

You can still apply this technique even if you don't have an email list.  Simply join a Facebook group related to your niche, establish rapport with the members and then start a thread asking this question.

(Important: Make sure you've added value to the group before doing this. It's a tacky move to jump into a group and start asking questions when nobody knows who you are.)

#2. Create Product Review Pages

Some books have potential to generate income outside of author royalties.

We felt we could monetize the book by creating blog pages, which promote organizing supplies.  This content is broken down into seven pages—each focusing on a different room in the house.

Here's an example of what this looks like:

Now, the Amazon Associates program doesn't allow authors to use their links in eBooks. But you can legitimately get around this by creating review pages or shopping pages on your website.  The trick here is to mention the link once or twice, but don't beat readers over the head with it.

It's still more important to provide a quality (non-salesy) reading experience.

#3. Create Content Upgrades

I'm in the process of adding content upgrades to my books (credit to Chandler Bolt for this idea.)  The idea here is to create a specialized offer that specifically targets the audience of that book.

My offer for 10-Minute Declutter is still being created, but Barrie did an excellent job with her lead magnet, which includes 10 different checklists that can be used while decluttering.

In theory, these content upgrades can dramatically increase your reader to subscriber ratio.

Think about the topic for your next book…

Ask yourself: "What extra content can I add that readers will love?"

This could be a checklist, a list of resources or a quick action guide.  The important thing is to create something that's actionable and is directly related to the topic of the book.

#4. Split-Test Your Book Covers

There is a LOT of value to split-testing your cover images.  What I mean here is you should take two completely different covers and run them by an anonymous audience.

The service I use is PickFu.  And you can see how I use it here: https://www.pickfu.com/YV2QGR

Another option is Mechanical Turk, which is MUCH cheaper, but I'm too techno-stupid to figure it out, so I use PickFu because it's super easy to figure out.

So why am I recommending these sites instead of asking your friends or social connections?

It's simple…

You WANT people to brutally honest.  When someone knows and likes you, they might not provide important feedback that you need to hear.  It's better to have strangers tell you they hate your cover now instead of putting it into the marketplace and having potential readers ignore your book.
.
Well, those are lessons learned for this book launch.

Hope you got value from it!

And again, here are the links to "10-Minute Declutter" if you want to simplify your life.

Talk Soon,

Steve

Fwd: 3 'Mainstream" marketing formulas (in plain sight)

-------- Forwarded Message --------
Subject: 3 'Mainstream" marketing formulas (in plain sight)
Date: Thu, 21 May 2015 16:36:43 -0400
From: Andy Jenkins & Mike Filsaime <training@marketinggenesis.com>

In the last few months, we've seen 3 main-stream industries again prove that perhaps THE most important marketing asset anyone can control is a "Distribution Network".

In this email, I want to explore how small businesses like "Us" can model what massive, mainstream industries have accomplished.

(Note:  #1 - Because of some mainstream revenue figure illustrations in this email - it scored high on the SP4M score meter - so some of the numbers below will have odd symbols or phrases in them.  Sigh.

#2 - This is a bit of a long one...)

Let's begin...

Consider this recent activity:

Hollywood - The Film Industry

The feature film "The Transformers: Age of Extinction" was given a 18% (Out of 100) rating by RottenTomatoes.com.

As of today, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com it's earned just over 1 Brazillion Doll3rs in World Wide Box Office Receipts.

The Video Game Industry

The venerable Video Game Studio called Bungie, best known for their hit game series "Halo", released a highly anticipated game called "Destiny".  One of the largest Gaming Portals, Gamespot.com gave Destiny a 6 out of 10 review.

In it's first day of release, Destiny reportedly earned $Five Hundred MAHeLLYon Duckets in sales.

The Music Industry

With the release of the iPhone 6, Apple also announced that all iTunes users would receive U2's new album "Songs of Innocence" for free.  Metacritic.com has totaled an aggregate review of the album at 66 out of 100.

U2 reported received north of $100XTen Thousand Beans for that maneuver.

How Is This Possible? (And how can 'We' do this, too?)

Each of these industries has a deep-rooted and mature Distribution Network - a built-in and ever-present mechanism to propel content into the hands of consumers.

Hollywood more or less controls the Theaters, the Video On Demand Networks, and entire channels on cable networks.

The Video Game Industry has Valve's "Steam" Network, Electronic Arts has the "Origin" platform for PC's, and the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox platforms offer game purchases at point of play.

The Music Industry's network consists of iTunes (and Beats Music) users, Pandora, Google Play, Rdio, Spotify…

...You get the idea.

This is how even Low-Rated and poorly reviewed content finds itself in the 9-Figurez earnings range!

And for eCommerce and Intellectual Property?

Well, there's Amazon on the eCommerce front, right?  And lets not forget the Udemy, Lynda.com, and Kindle for I.P. - even Apple's newsstand has massive penetration.

Then, there's "Us".

Authors, Professional Service Providers, Trainers & Coaches, Consultants, Inventors, Teachers, Software Creators…

What is our "Distribution Network"?

Or, more importantly, how can we build a distribution network of our own?  One that drives our content into the hands of a ripe and eager market?

There's 2 places we now have at our disposal:

1 - Social Media

Because we can create groups and audiences and then advertise to them, places like Facebook, YouTube, Google Plus, Pinterest, and Linkedin are starting to provide a critical mass of eyeballs to people like us.  The issue of noise and topic selection still remains, but the segmentation of and accessibility to specific 'user interests' is becoming more and more mature.

Groups, Likes, Shares-ers, Circles, and Social Media Channel Subscribers are becoming more effective as ad-hoc (created on the fly by Us) mini-distribution networks.

But - by FAR - the most profitable and reliable distribution network is...

2 - Email Subscribers (If they're segmented correctly)

Fundamentally, Email Subscribers - i.e. YOUR LIST - is a bonafide ASSET.

If you ever have the opportunity to sell your company, you'll discover that your list of customers and subscribers is one of the first things that a Dollar Value gets attached to.

More importantly, when it comes to explicit marketing value, an email list is truly the most On-Demand Profit Generator you have at your disposal.

I can tell you from nearly 15 years of Marketing Online that nothing holds a candle to - not social media, not paid advertising, not SEO - nothing (That's practical or affordable) can touch the capability and capacity for sales and profit…

...that Email does.

I know - I know - you've heard and seen the same prognostications as I have  - "Email is dead", "Email is sooo Web 1.0"...

But study online marketing as long as I have, and you start to see some lesser discussed realities with regard Email Marketing..

...Think about this:

What is the most important goal with your Social Media or Organic Search Engine Traffic?

Get them on a List!

What should you do with your paid traffic?

Get them on a List!

What do you want to accomplish when Affiliates send you traffic?

Get them on a List!

See what I'm sayin'?  No matter what the source of the traffic is, the best use of that traffic is to ALWAYS…

...GET THEM ON A LIST!

Isn't that ironic?  LOL!

Because fundamentally, what is an Email List of Subscribers that have voluntarily given you the ability to contact them?

What is it when it becomes a built-in and ever-present mechanism to propel you content into the hands of highly-targeted consumers?

It's a Distribution Network.

Long Live Email Marketing!

Now, lets just hope that we've seen the last of the Transformers sequels.  :-)

The sustainability and revenue growth of your business (for people like us) is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to the growth and treatment of your Email List Subscribers.

Hey - I'm a topic expert too - like you.  I love creating content (Mike and I created over 100 hours of Video Content in the last 12 months).  Yes - it feels great to write, to record, to code, to GET BETTER at what we want to share and sell to our market.

But what makes us the money is when we make offers - TO OUR LIST.

Yes, we Advertise, and do Social Media Marketing - yes we've got Affiliate Support and SEO rankings...

If there's only one Marketing-Centric thing that can do - in my Humble and Grizzled Opinion - when you're done tweaking your course, or debugging your software, or creating lessons and tutorials…

...use your brain to get REALLY GOOD at Email Marketing.

Hope you found this email useful, or at least a little bit enlightening.

XOXO

Andy (With Mike cheering me on)

P.S. I know you're busy - you're working on your products and services - it's what gives you a real sense of accomplishment.  And I know it's hard to detach from "Creating" in order to Market what you create.  That's normal.

So - if you find it challenging to strike a balance between Creation and Marketing, then look at training that's "Template Based"

I.e. Much of the work is done for you - you just need to modify the templates and publish them to the network.

I'm a big fan of "The Machine" for Email List Building and Marketing Training and Templates - it's available for the next couple of days, and I'm using it to create every Funnel, Evergreen Product Launch, and Advertising Campaign for every product in our portfolio.

Watch this video to get the comprehensive overview of the Program. It's Highly Recommended.
